Marc, today's charrette was terrific. Thank you for your truly generous collaboration. You've caused me to turn a mental corner. Until recently, I thought that that to do really intelligent buildings, we'd need the right clients, the right engineers, and a premium budget. Thanks to you, I now believe that to do intelligent buildings all we need is INTELLIGENCE!—and the guts to ask the simple questions until we get the answers, and the courage of our convictions to persuade others...

We can do this and it will change things. You've empowered us. Thanks. –Ellen

Assembling the Right Design and Construction Team For Your Project

You have envisioned the outcome that you want – how do you find the right people to help you bring it to life?  Thousands of design professionals have been accredited in green building by the US Green Building Council accreditation process.  Does this mean that

  • all those accredited are very knowledgeable in green design?
  • all those accredited have significant experience in green design and have produced projects that perform at a high level?
  • the key decision makers who will be designing the project are the ones who are accredited?
  • None of the above?

The correct answer in many cases is (d).

We help our clients select the right team to accomplish their goals.  We make sure that each team member is capable and dedicated to green design principles.  We look at their past work as the best predictor of future performance.  We help you write Requests for Qualifications and Requests for Proposals.  We teach you how to ask questions that will reveal the skill, knowledge, and commitment level of those you choose to interview.  We will help you design a meaningful process to get to know the firms well enough to make an informed choice.  In some cases, we review construction documents of their past projects to assess what they really incorporate in their design work.

You’ll be able to separate the hype from the people who really are out there delivering high performance projects for their clients (and there are more and more of them!).  And you’ll learn a lot about green design, and have some fun, in the process.
