Dartmouth College McLaughlin Residence Hall

The McLaughlin Cluster and McLane-Fahey residence halls have added 500 new beds to the Dartmouth Campus. Our integrated design services led to a building envelope with a highly effective continuous air barrier and a very well insulated building with minimal thermal bridging. The thermal enclosure consists of a combination of three inches of spray polyurethane foam in the cavity walls combined with rubberized asphaltic membranes at transitions to form a monolithic air barrier. The roof includes a full membrane air barrier over gypsum sheathing above the steel decking, with three layers of rigid polyurethane foam totalling 7-1/2 inches over the membrane.

The heating, ventilation, and cooling system uses PEX tubing cast into a topping slab over the precast concrete plank to deliver radiant heating and cooling through both the ceiling and floor. Dehumidification is handled by the ventilation air, which employs enthalpy recovery and demand control to keep loads down. Drainwater heat recovery is installed on the shower risers to reduce the energy demand on the hot water system.

Dartmouth has been a major client for over a decade. We have helped them set performance metrics and begin to implement LEED; interview and choose engineering consultants; and re-think how they design, construct, and operate buildings. LEED Silver. Occupied 2006.
